Gatot Kumaidi

Born and educated in Malang, Gatot Kumaidi graduated from the Fine Arts Education Program at IKIP Malang in 1994 and has since established a dedicated practice as a sculptor. His work is characterized by an exploration of diverse materials, including wood, stone, metal, and found objects, often combining carving and assemblage techniques to create richly textured forms. Reclaimed wood serves as a primary medium in his practice, valued for the traces of its previous life—nail marks, cracks, weathered surfaces, and embedded stones—which become integral elements of the narratives he seeks to convey.

Beyond their material presence, Kumaidi’s sculptures reflect a deeper philosophical inquiry. The meticulous polishing of surfaces to a luminous finish is not merely an aesthetic choice, but a symbolic gesture representing the pursuit of clarity, balance, and inner calm amid the roughness and noise of contemporary life.
