Gatot Pujiarto

Born and educated in Malang, Gatot Pujiarto has cultivated a distinct artistic voice that stands apart from conventional perceptions of contemporary art in his region. Drawn to the unusual, the anomalous, and the tragic, he transforms these themes into compelling visual narratives through works predominantly composed of fabric scraps, thread, and mixed materials. Through processes of layering, stitching, tearing, binding, patching, and assemblage, Gatot communicates social critique, moral reflections, and observations of everyday phenomena. These tactile interventions generate evocative surfaces and visual tensions that invite deeper contemplation, revealing the complex relationship between material, memory, and meaning.

Gatot’s presence within the contemporary art landscape is firmly established through extensive participation in group exhibitions across Indonesia and various Asian countries. His solo exhibitions have also gained international recognition, including Stitching Stories (2016), his first solo presentation in Hong Kong hosted by Pearl Lam Galleries in collaboration with Tatler Asia, and Beyond Image and Dreams (2019) at Pearl Lam Galleries in Shanghai. Through these exhibitions, Gatot continues to expand the reach of his practice while engaging audiences across diverse cultural contexts.
