Suwandi Waeng (b. 1978, Trenggalek) is an artist based in Batu, East Java, where he currently works from Ruang Tumbuh Art Studio. Largely self-taught, he began his artistic practice in 2007 and has since cultivated a body of work shaped by continuous experimentation and personal exploration. His early works centered on the human figure before gradually shifting toward portrait abstraction, a transition marked by his solo exhibition Transplastik at Artotel Surabaya in 2016.

In the years that followed, Suwandi’s artistic inquiry expanded into themes of memory and childhood experience, often materialized through atmospheric mountain landscapes and imagined natural environments. These works function as visual reflections on nostalgia, longing, and the emotional traces of place. A defining characteristic of his practice is the incorporation of acrylic paint, dacron, and glitter, materials that create richly textured surfaces and lend his paintings a distinctive visual presence. Since presenting his works publicly in 2008, Suwandi has participated in numerous exhibitions across Indonesia and abroad. His works have been featured in Affordable Art Fair with Art Xchange Gallery, Singapore (2011), Asia Contemporary Art with Art Xchange Gallery, Hong Kong (2012), and most recently Closed Alpha Testing with Kendy's Gallery at Jakarta Art Hub. Through an ever-evolving exploration of material, memory, and form, Suwandi continues to expand the possibilities of his visual language.
